Hundreds injured after massive explosion in Chinese city of Tianjin

An explosion caused by flammable goods at a container terminal rocked China’s northern city of Tianjin at about 11:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday (11:30 a.m. ET).

The number of injured people is reportedly over 500 with and the figure for fatalities is yet to be known.

An explosion rocked the Binhai New Area in north China's Tianjin Municipality at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The cause and casualties are not immediately known.

Residents in neighborhoods nearby said flame lit up the sky and the blast with a big noise blew up dust of dozens of meters high. The explosion also shattered their window glass and fish tanks.

Li Jing, a woman who lives hundreds of meters away from the explosion site, said she saw the wounded being sent to hospitals.
